Stories like this always leave me wondering the degree of poverty I would need to experience to contemplate something as egregious as this.
I frequently am forced to eat out as my daily schedule puts me in a position where cooking all the meals I eat myself is virtually impossible. I have heard such stories innumerable times and almost starved myself sick when I was initially transferred to a semi rural environment at one point in my career.
I had managed to identify a restaurant I thought was quite decent, clean and affordable. Plus, their meals were always served piping hot, another quality I always look out for when eating out, because I believe the hotter the meal, the lesser the chances of picking up harmful bacteria.
I had formed the habit of taking lunch and dinner there while still trying to put my cooking utensils together when a well meaning friend told me he had heard the woman used mortuary water to cook her meals to ensure a steady customer base. I had little difficulty believing this. For one thing the proprietor of the place had a sinister look about her (or so i thought), the staff (her children), were all unfriendly and rude, their meals weren’t particularly tasty and there was no variety and yet, the place was always chock full of customers patiently waiting for their daily dose of insults and unsavoury meals.
Well, I stopped eating there and tried another place but the food was so bad I had to quit and look for yet another.
Now this last place was not quite as clean as the first but they would always microwave food before giving it to you, they were really courteous and had a wide variety of dishes to choose from. I was just becoming a regular “customer” there, when, lo and behold, the same story again! But you know what? This time I chose to ignore it. This woman seemed to me like someone who was actually making an effort to ensure that people keep coming back. I could see good reason why she would be able to maintain her clientele. With the other place, I genuinely could not fathom why people kept coming back despite the really poor service and bad manners displayed by the staff.
Tired of shopping around for eating spots, I stuck with that one until i left the town making sure to pray fervently before eating each meal though!
How anyone can in all good conscience, deliberately put urine, menstrual blood, water from corpses or any such material in food and serve same to people to eat just leaves me baffled. How much hate do you need to be carrying around for that $#it to even happen? If not for anything else, I can’t even begin to imagine the bacteria one would have imbibed eating food cooked with such things. Haba!
Has life really been that hard on some people that all they have to offer others now is hate?
The truth is, I am the kind of person who has always had great difficulty believing in “juju” and other such spiritual stuff. Apparently, one underestimates these things at one’s peril.
Perhaps the story below could serve as an eye opener.
This woman runs a popular restaurant where men and women troop in to eat, not know that they are eating away their destinies, in this Nigeria…
She is the owner of one of the most popular local restaurant (buka) in the Eleme area of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. I hear the woman confessed last weekend to using spiritual means to entice customers, as well as take their “destinies.” True life story!
The news of her confession spread around town and many who have been going to her restaurant to enjoy themselves could not believe their ears that they’ve been eating food made with corpses water. Really sad! Some of her customers (including Okada men) and angry onlookers descended on her but she was rescued by Policemen who later took her away.
Eating out is cheap but with stories like this one need to be careful.
